Toshihiro Matsumoto: Toray has been producing and selling waterless offset plates since 1979. At that time, the basic conditions for anhydrous printing were not very mature, and it took a lot of time to prepare relevant materials and configurations such as special inks, printing machine cooling equipment, etc. Therefore, it was first officially sold in Japan in 1990, and then promoted in overseas markets such as Europe, and gradually expanded the market

q2: what progress has been made in the waterless offset printing technology in the last 30 years of the 20th century? In addition, in the past 10 years after entering the 21st century, what do you think is the biggest breakthrough of waterless offset printing technology

Toshihiro Matsumoto: first of all, the development and improvement of silica gel with good ink resistance are more effective. This is very important for anhydrous offset. Fortunately, Toray group has rich experience in silica gel, which also accelerates the improvement of anhydrous plates. In addition to silicone coating, other components of Toray have also invested a lot in the polymer chemistry technology that Toray is good at. Secondly, in terms of production and manufacturing, Toray has advanced unique coating technology. At the same time, with the assistance of the ink factory, Toray has developed anhydrous special ink; Printing machine manufacturers are also vigorously promoting printing machines with cooling function, thus promoting the popularization of waterless printing. Represented by KBA (gaobao), the company has developed a water free special printing machine and put it into the market, and its sales performance has been expanding. The printing machine has the most suitable conditions for anhydrous printing, which can be realized more easily and stably. In the past 10 years, the use of waterless printing has not only reduced the use of fountain solution, but also significantly improved the workshop environment. q3: at present, how is the promotion and popularization of waterless offset printing in other countries and regions different from that in Japan? What do you think are the reasons for these differences

Toshihiro Matsumoto: in terms of market penetration, Japan is the highest in China. This is because it is easiest to pour strength into China at the beginning of sales. At the same time, through these years' efforts, overseas sales have also developed by leaps and bounds. Especially in Europe, it has a strong awareness of environmental protection, especially KBA (gaobao), the world's oldest printing machine factory, which has developed and manufactured a special rotary newspaper printing machine for water free printing. Taking this opportunity, its sales to Europe have increased sharply. Of course, we are now focusing on China, the world's largest printing market, to expand sales

q4: last year, it was mentioned that Toray has begun to build a new plate mill in the Czech Republic. What is the current construction status and progress of this mill? At that time, Toray said that the plant was mainly to meet the needs of the European, Middle East and North American markets. What is the reason for locating the plant in the Czech Republic rather than other countries

Toshihiro Matsumoto: as just said, the purpose of building a factory in the Czech Republic is mainly to cope with the increase in European demand, and to take into account the use of the existing fiber factory site and worker resources of Toray. It is still under construction and is expected to be officially put into production in November this year. In addition, considering that the demand of the Chinese market will increase in the near future, plate manufacturing plants will also be built in China, forming a production and manufacturing pattern based on Japan, Europe and China. This year's production in the Czech Republic will be taken as a new starting point for waterless printing in the world

q5: in the global strategic layout of Toray, Japan, Europe and China are the three most important strongholds. What is the current sales proportion of Toray in these three countries or regions? What is your favorite market and why

Toshihiro Matsumoto: at present, Japan accounts for about 40%, Europe accounts for 40% and China accounts for 7%, so at present, Japan and Europe are the mainstream markets. We are looking forward to the rapid development of sales to China

q6: can ordinary offset presses be easily converted to waterless printing? Are there any adaptability and stability problems after the conversion

Toshihiro Matsumoto: as long as the printing machine is equipped with a constant temperature device, it can be replaced with waterless printing, and the special plate punching machine and ink for waterless printing are also necessary. As long as the correct printing conditions are selected and used, there is no problem in converting to waterless printing. Now most printing machines are equipped with thermostatic devices, so it will be more convenient to convert to waterless printing

q7: is the number of factories converting from waterless printing to waterless printing increasing? What is the reason for this change, that is, what are the advantages after the change

Junguang Matsumoto: we believe that more and more customers will convert to waterless printing in the future. In addition to the environmental advantages of not using water, the cost advantages of reducing paper damage and improving efficiency are also very significant. Recently, more customers choose to use waterless printing for UV packaging printing, especially for printing of non absorbent materials (PP, pet, PVC). Waterless printing is the most appropriate choice

q8: Although the market potential of waterless offset printing is huge, the watered version still firmly occupies the mainstream market. When do you predict that the waterless version will grow to a position comparable to the watered version? In other words, what do you think of the development prospect of waterless offset printing in the future

Toshihiro Matsumoto: at present, it is true that water printing occupies the mainstream of the market, but I believe that the overall market scale of water printing will shrink in the future. In the future, the basic conditions for anhydrous printing will be more complete, and one day anhydrous printing will become the mainstream. Especially in the expanding Chinese market, people's awareness of environmental protection has improved, so it is more likely that waterless printing will occupy the mainstream of the printing market. For that day, Toray will make every effort to accelerate market development
